Dr. Kobayashi was invited as a keynote speaker at the 55th Japan Biochemical Society at Hokkaido branch meeting.
The meeting was held at Rakuno Gakuen University, which has the biggest campus within the private school. To speak our mind, it's hard to tell which area is covering campus, or forest, or farm, or grassland...it's that big!
Rakuno Gakuen University was established by Torizo Kurosawa, who was a pioneer in cattle breeding in cold regions to provide education for cattle breeders. He also founded an independent company to manufacture and sales of daily products, which later became the biggest daily products company, "Snow Brand Seed Co., Ltd.".
In the university's coop store, many food items are on the shelf and all of them are stamped as "Healthy Land for a Healthy People". This is an idea originally expressed by Torizo Kurosawa and it's his motto ever since. We guess it's a same meaning as "foster a sound body and mind". Torizo was also involved with Seizo Tanaka during the Acio Copper Mine incident to help farmers. The phrase "Healthy Land for a Healthy People", you can really tell his spirit. By the way, the establishment of three former imperial university (Hokkaido, Tohoku, Kyushu) was mainly founded by huge amount of donations from Furukawa family (Furukawa business group, now includes Fuji Electric, Furukawa Electric Group, Fujitsu, Mizuho Financial Bank, etc.) who was an owner of Acio Copper Mine at that time. Well, those dirty money ended in these universities with "a clean purpose".
After the seminar, we all enjoyed the ice cream made by the university. It was rich but soft, so delicious! The photo was taken in front of a cow, with teachers of Molecular and Cellular Biological Sciences from Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences.
