-The history of Kobayashi laboratory-

In 2004, Dr. Koichi Kobayashi established his own laboratory focusing on innate immunity at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute (Boston MA, USA), after being a semi-independent researcher at Yale University (Connecticut, USA). The laboratory was set on the 14th floor, with a great view of Old Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. There, aside from his research, he taught immunology for medical-school students and graduate students from Harvard Medical School. At that time, staffs were recruited from USA, Europe and Asia. Together with the staffs, they have discovered the master transcription factor of MHC class I, and have discovered that the Crohn's disease related gene Nod2 is a critical regulator of controlling ileal microbiota. In 2012, the laboratory moved to Texas A&M University, Texas USA. Texas A&M University is an extensive university, which holds a football stadium of 100,000 capacity and an airport inside of the campus area. Research funding is also substantial; the university holds about 11 billion dollars, which is about 1 billion dollars per year for the research fund (First rank for the university funding is Harvard University, with 35 billion dollars). In 2017, Dr. Kobayashi opened up a sister laboratory here in Hokkaido University, and has started research in Japan after 20 years of abroad.
